TV shopping channel turns to Sharp for new professional monitors
London, 20 July 2010 - Back in 1993, QVC were at the forefront of the revolutionary move to TV shopping in the UK. 16 years later, the company is a household name, broadcasting 24 hours a day to over 23 million UK homes.
Now competing in an increasingly crowded and complex market, QVC has recently replaced the CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitors in its live broadcast production galleries with Sharp PNS655 Professional LCD monitors, resulting in improved colour control and balance as well as energy and cost efficiencies, as it seeks to remain ahead of the curve in all aspects of its business and broadcasting techniques.
QVC has two identical broadcast production galleries, alternately operating live to air for 17 hours per day. The gallery displays, which originally consisted of 44 CRT displays per gallery, were becoming increasingly uneconomical to replace and repair.
After a detailed procurement process, QVC selected a display consisting of eight Sharp PNS655 LCD professional monitors- four per gallery. Evertz MVP multiviewers were used to make collages of studio sources so that up to 20 sources could be shown on each monitor at one time.
David Tidd, Broadcast Systems Engineer at QVC identified several key benefits that helped the company decide on Sharp monitors. The fact that colour balance was great “out of the box” added to the overall impression that the monitors required very little work to set up.
Compared with all the competitor models, Sharp’s screens were best able to display images at broadcast quality, at the same time as working well alongside QVC’s existing quality control system. Finally, the screens offer great cost and energy savings, compared to the previous CRT displays, as well as being considerably cooler.
Tidd concluded, “The decision to buy Sharp’s monitors has been excellent for us. QVC Japan chose Sharp monitors some three years ago for the same purpose, and we will be moving to Sharp monitors in our new operation in Italy on the basis of our good experience in Japan and the UK.”
