Statement regarding ‘Cougar’ safety notice

Sharp Electronics (UK) Ltd has today posted a Safety Notice Alert on its dealer web site (TradeNet) with regard to a malfunction that may occur on the Cougar range of photocopiers, namely the Sharp models below:

AR-250/280/285/286/287/335/336/337/405/407/505/507

A technical bulletin was originally issued to Sharp s dealer and customer network on 7 February 2005 with regard to potential failures of the FASTON terminal on the Fusing Interface PWB, as fitted to the above listed range of copiers. This advised that the PWB should be replaced at the next service call or at the earliest opportunity, to avoid error messages or malfunction.

Sharp has now issued an updated version of this bulletin and has alerted its dealers by email and by telephone, and is now urging them to act upon the instructions provided immediately, as the fault relates to an important health and safety issue, namely a risk of fire.

Sharp ceased production of the above models in 2004, and total worldwide production totalled approximately 400,000 units. Of these, 12,400 were sold in the UK, and 60% of units have now been updated with the new PWB unit to date. Replacement PWB units are being supplied by Sharp free of charge.

Sharp is aware of two instances out of 400,000 where ignition has occurred, however, it is advising that all units be upgraded with immediate effect in order to prevent any further occurrences.

Contact information for dealers and customers

Dealers requiring further information and upgrades should contact the Sharp technical department by email at copier.hotline@sharp-uk.co.uk, with full serial number details. End user companies should contact the supplier of their product for further advice.
