Sharp welcomes 50 million budget boost for micro-renewables
On 22 March, Chancellor Gordon Brown announced 50 million of new money for micro-generation technologies in his tenth budget statement.
Andrew Lee, Sharp UK s General Manager for Solar, commented, This represents a timely boost for the renewables sector in the UK, following many apprehensive months preceding the introduction of the Low Carbon Buildings Programme. Although not on a level with our European neighbours, this investment will nevertheless give Sharp renewed confidence to continue expansion of our solar PV business in the UK and I look forward to working with the Government to maximise the potential for micro-generation.
He continued, Sharp has already made significant investments in the UK in anticipation of growing commercial and domestic demand for renewable energy systems. In 2004, our first European PV manufacturing facility was opened in Wrexham, employing more than 200 staff. It is hoped that this new money will be spent effectively, and in a way that will increase uptake of solar PV and other zero carbon technologies, especially in consumer markets.
