In a move that reinforces an ongoing shift in company culture, Sharp Electronics (UK) Ltd has appointed Paul Molyneux as Managing Director, the first time a non-Japanese director has headed Sharp Corporation s British subsidiary.
Sharp Corporation is in the process of reviewing its worldwide management and business structure, with the aim of localising management within its subsidiaries and increasing emphasis on overseas (non-Japanese domestic) sales, and the appointment of Molyneux, 41, is a key step in the review of its European operations.
He joins Sharp UK from IDT (Oregon Scientific), where he was UK Managing Director and European Vice President, and has a wealth of experience of the UK IT and consumer electronics industries, having previously held management positions at Sony, Hinari, Belling and Morphy Richards. Reporting to Hans Kleis, CEO of Hamburg-based Sharp Electronics Europe, he will also work closely with regional teams based within the International Business Group at Sharp Corporation s headquarters in Osaka.
Sharp is a powerful brand, with strong recognition in the UK market, an excellent heritage, and huge potential, comments Molyneux. Currently 50% of Sharp s business is in Japan, but with the country s population expected to decline by 10% in the next decade, the Corporation has recognised that it needs to increase its regional sales across the world in order to grow business as a whole. With substantial investment by Sharp Corporation in technologies including LCD and solar photovoltaics beginning to reap rewards, it s a very exciting time to be joining the company.
