Downloading audio from PC and recording music to take on the move has never been easier, thanks to Sharp s latest personal MiniDisc recorder.

The new IM-DR580H comes with a unique multi-link docking cradle, which makes transferring audio files from PC to the personal MD, battery recharging, playback and editing of tracks extremely simple.

The silver-finish, circular cradle features a large LCD display, main function and jog buttons. It can be left permanently connected to a PC via a USB cable and the mains electricity supply for convenient charging of the main unit and access to music on the MiniDisc itself or on the PC using the supplied BeatJam software. MP3 or WAV files can be downloaded onto MiniDisc at up to 50 times real-time speed using ATRAC encoding.

The IM-DR580H personal recorder incorporates Sharp s revolutionary 1-bit digital amplification technology, meaning superb sound quality and excellent battery life. 1-bit technology does away with traditional analogue amplification and instead utilises a sophisticated, yet extremely compact, digital amplifier to provide crystal clear audio whilst using a fraction of the power of a traditional personal MiniDisc.

So much so that, using the integral Ni-MH rechargeable battery plus an additional AA battery, the IM-DR580H boasts 122 hours playback time in Long Play 4 (LP4) mode that s over five days continuous playback.

Whilst the IM-DR580H keeps on running when most other MD personals have run out of steam, it also leaves them standing in the sound stakes. The 1-bit amp delivers crystal-clear, powerful audio via a four-pole earphone plug specially-designed to make the most of the source music to a choice of in-ear or ear-fit headphones, which are both supplied. And with its MiniDisc Long Play (MDLP) facility, up to 320 minutes of music can be recorded onto an 80 minute MiniDisc.

Measuring 80.1 x 16.6 x 72.6mm (W x H x D), and weighing 120g*, the main unit is very slim and is finished in brushed silver, with controls arranged in a circular design making for very clean styling. The unit also has an in-line full-function remote control with back-lit LCD.

In addition it features a sampling rate converter and is supplied with an optical digital cable, ensuring it can record digitally from CD and Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB) radio as well as PC audio files and the usual analogue sources. With an audio output and speaker terminals on the multi-link cradle, it can even be used as a music source for a separate audio system or as an ultra-compact system in its own right.

The IM-DR580H joins three other personal MiniDisc recorders in Sharp s range for 2004 the IM-DR420H, IM-DR400E and MD-DR370H. The 400H and 420E are both Net MD models with 1-bit audio amplification technology, whilst the entry-level 370H features 1-bit audio for extra-long battery life.

The IM-DR580H is now available along with the IM-DR420H and IM-DR400E, with the MD-DR370H launching in March.
