Sharp to Manufacture Solar Energy Products in the UK
The world s leading manufacturer of solar products chooses Wrexham, North Wales as new facility site.
Wrexham, North Wales, October 30th, 2003 Anticipating significant growth in the European solar energy market, Sharp Electronics (UK) Ltd., a sales and marketing subsidiary of Sharp Corporation, Osaka, Japan, today announced plans to establish a manufacturing facility for solar products in the UK.
The new facility will be constructed at the Sharp Manufacturing Company UK (SUKM) plant at Wrexham, North Wales where a range of solar products for on-grid and off-grid markets in the UK and Europe will be produced, beginning spring 2004. SUKM will assemble solar modules for residential, commercial and industrial installations.
Europe Ready for Solar
Solar is one of a number of core Sharp next generation business and technologies, said Toshihiko Fujimoto, Group General Manager of Sharp Corporation Solar Systems Group. Consistent with our corporate mission, Sharp is committed to developing innovative solar technologies and one-of-a-kind products that meet the energy demands of today s lifestyles while helping to protect the environment for future generations, said Mr Fujimoto.
European Growth in Solar Energy
In 2002 the growth in European demand for photovoltaics continued apace, increasing to 110MW shipped and this year it is predicted that capacity will increase by 45% to approximately 160MW. Continued growth, driven by improving technologies and favourable PV policies, should ensure a promising future for photovoltaics in Europe.
UK demand for solar energy products for year 2003 is around 6MW including on and off-grid. Following the UK Government s commitment to increase the use of renewable energy this figure is expected to grow to over 20MW by the year 2006. The capacity of solar modules produced at the Wrexham facility is scheduled to be 20MW in 2004 and will increase in response to market demand. Output will support increases in the use of solar modules in the UK and throughout Europe.
The EU’s WEEE Directive, a law related to the collection and recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment is set to come into effect from 2005. Currently photovoltaic modules are not covered by these regulations but even though they have a working life of over 25 years, Sharp giving consideration to the environment, will set a precedent of recycling and reusing these modules at SUKM.
Sharp Manufacturing Endorsement
Sharp Electronics (UK) Ltd Chairman, Mr Hiroshi Sasaoka stated, The staff at SUKM are delighted with this announcement. This decision will guarantee that the Wrexham facility will remain at the heart of Sharp s operations in Europe. The number of jobs created by this announcement will be 45 in 2004, rising to 90 in 2005. We are particularly pleased that we will be able to make a significant contribution to the move for the conservation vital natural resources and to expand the use of solar power.
