Sharp Brings Colour to the Masses

Sharp has unveiled the AR-C260, a colour and mono copier printer set to revolutionise the modern office. Designed to offer high quality colour output at a cost similar to that of mono copies and prints, the AR-C260 will allow every office access to high-speed colour at an affordable price.

Launching in the UK in March 2003, the AR-C260 builds on the success of its predecessor, the AR-C250, and has the same intuitive design familiar to users of Sharp s popular AR mono series of copier printers.

Ian Jones, Product Marketing Manager for Colour Solutions commented, Sharp has developed the AR-C260 because it is clear that the demand for colour is no longer limited to the niche markets such as design agencies and marketing departments. Colour is now widely accepted as an integral part of a raft of business documents, however to date it has been difficult for many companies to access colour at a manageable cost.

He continued, The launch of the AR-C260 provides businesses with the first real opportunity to bring high speed, high quality colour in-house. Currently most businesses rely on dedicated inkjet or desktop colour printers, which can be expensive and slow, or the use of high street outlets, which may be inconvenient. The AR-C260 is the first copier printer to offer high-speed colour at a cost comparable to that of mono documents.

Performing at 32 pages per minute in mono and an impressive 26 pages per minute in colour, the AR-C260 is one of the fastest copier-printers within its price range. The AR-C260 utilises 4-bit LED technology, where most other LED printers use 1 and 2-bit, allowing it to produce a greater range of colour shades and a more accurate representation of the original document.

The easy to use LCD panel ensures the AR-C260 is suitable for all levels of expertise, whether an experienced operator, or a first time user. As a simple standalone copier, the automatic copying modes will produce high quality colour copies at the touch of a button. For more advanced applications, where the colour balance or image output needs to be modified, a more skilled operator can access the required commands via the touch screen.

An A3 full bleed facility allows larger images to be copied onto A3 oversized paper, which is then guillotined down to size. The addition of the optional duplex module enables the AR-C260 to produce double sided copies and prints, without the need for user intervention. For greater flexibility, the AR-C260 is capable of handling up to 200 gsm via this unit, providing greater versatility - a feature unique within the industry.

The bypass will accept up to 300gsm paper, effectively a light card, ideal for printing report covers or heavier inserts. In addition, the generous by-pass holds 250 sheets of standard paper, ensuring refills are infrequent.

The AR-C260 is well featured, offering finishing capabilities normally associated with high volume machines. Multi-position stapling, saddle stitching and folding are all featured whilst the optional finisher offering two and four hole punching provides a professional finish.

When copies are taken from a newspaper or magazine, print will often bleed through from the previous page, obscuring the copy. To cure this, the AR-C260 has the AL mode, which allows users to reproduce clear copies from originals, cleaning away all background print.

The AR-C260 is available in two versions, a standalone copier with the option to network, and as the AR-C260M, which comes connected as standard, with a powerful 300mhz processor and 128mb of memory upgradeable to 640mb.

By adding the AR-C260M to a network, users can access a range of features such as email reporter, which allows remote monitoring via standard email messages to the local operator and service engineer should a problem arise.

The AR-C260M may also be used for push scanning where images are pushed to a directory on the PC by the scanner. Pull scanning where the image is pulled by the PC from the scanner will be available from September 2003. Mono or colour originals may be scanned to a maximum of 600dpi and distributed as an email or FTP file. When used in conjunction with an electronic archiving and retrieval system, such as SharpFind, this creates a powerful document management solution.

For total management of all network printing, the AR-C260M can be controlled using CallistoTM software. A print server based application, Callisto offers a smart print queue service to boost productivity by load balancing print jobs to other printers sharing the network, automatically splitting high volume requests between multiple printers. The software monitors the status of all printers on the network and automatically re-directs jobs when a device is unavailable. This powerful tool ensures a printer is always available and job completion time is kept to a minimum.

Confidential documents printed via the AR-C260 remain secure since, unlike many other copier printers, the hard disk within the Sharp device is protected by a Data Security Kit. This uses 128-bit encryption technology when processing print jobs, making retrieval by unauthorised personnel almost impossible. The Data Security Kit will be available for the AR-C260 from September 2003.

Finally, having been designed with both the end user and engineer in mind, the AR-C260 should rarely need attention. The engine utilises the latest technology including oil-less fusing, to produce a clean matt finish. The device has advanced toner technology with a mono-component unit, a single disposable consumable including both toner and developer, to keep costs down and make replenishment easy.
