Ref:PR870CB 2nd April 2001
SHARP ESTABLISHES EUROPEAN MOBILE TELECOMMUNICATIONS DEVELOPMENT SUBSIDIARY
Sharp Corporation today announced the formation of a European mobile phone development subsidiary. Sharp Telecommunications of Europe Limited (STE) will be operational as from 1st April and is to be based in Bracknell.
In Japan, Sharp is already recognised as a leading supplier to the mobile phone market. The unique and acclaimed SH04 J-Phone with in-built camera and SH05 with its large TFT colour LCD screen ably demonstrate Sharp s commitment to innovation in this highly competitive marketplace.
Sharp Corporation now intends to aggressively expand this business overseas to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the migration to next-generation mobile communications with the development of GPRS and UMTS technology.
Commencing its attack upon the European market, Sharp announced this week an agreement with BT Wireless to bring a GSM/GPRS mobile phone with in-built camera to the European market by the end of this year.
STE will initially concentrate on product development for GPRS and UMTS technology and services as supplied by telecommunications carriers throughout Europe. It will be involved in developing communications protocol software and in acquiring standards certification. STE has already acquired BABT approval for the testing of mobile devices.
STE will launch with an initial staffing level of 30 people and Sharp will be undertaking an aggressive recruitment drive to take that number to over 100.

Dr. Stephen Bold, managing director of Sharp Telecommunications of Europe Limited and Sharp Laboratories of Europe Limited said: Sharp has been very successful in the last ten years with research in Europe which has been utilised in Sharp products around the world. It is our research and development of key components such as LCDs, that allow Sharp to bring to market unique and exciting products. The new company will help us to make a lot more of that technology available in Europe.
